What does Saponified mean?
Saponification is the chemical reaction that occurs when oils or fats are mixed with an alkali, such as lye, to create soap. This process is necessary in soap making because it allows the oils and fats to be transformed into a solid form. Without saponification, the oils and fats would remain in their liquid form and would not have the cleansing properties that are associated with soap.
why is it important to "cure" soap?
It's necessary to cure cold process soap because it allows the soap to fully harden and dry out, which results in a longer-lasting bar of soap. During the curing process, excess water evaporates from the soap, making it harder and milder on the skin. Curing also allows the soap to develop its full fragrance and colour. Depending on the soap makers recipes, curing time can be between 4-6 weeks.
I've seen some white haze on natural soap bars. What is that?
Soda ash is a white, powdery substance that can form on the surface of natural soap during the curing process. It is harmless and we make every effort to limit its appearance on our soap without resorting to chemical use. Unlike commercial soaps, natural soap doesn't contain any chemicals to prevent or reduce soda ash.
why aren't your soap bars white?
Our natural soap bars aren't white because they don't contain any whitening agents. Instead, they are made with natural ingredients such as oils and butters. Chemical whitening agents such as titanium dioxide can be harmful as they have been linked to various health concerns including cancer & respiratory issues, so we don't even want to go there and leave it out of all of our products!
can i use your soap for my whole body?
Although our natural soap bars are designed for external use on any part of the body, we recommend trying each product on a small area first before using them everywhere. Everyones skin is different and may react differently to certain ingredients. It's always better to be safe than sorry!
How long do your natural soap bars last?
Our natural soap bars don't contain any preservatives. Our bars can last up to a year or more if stored properly. It's important to keep them in a dry place and away from direct sunlight. We recommend you use your bar within one year of purchase. The usage rate and drying time of your soap can determine how long a bar will last. With daily use and proper drying, your bar should last for a month or more! We make 'em BIG!
